All JROTC Cadets are given a two day class on Air Rifle Safety & Marksmanship followed by a thrid day of qualification shooting.
Scores from the qualification are used to determine eligibility for placement on the Air Rifle Team for those cadets who are interested in trying out for the team.
The JROTC Competition Air Rifle Team actually consists of three (4 persons) teams, plus two alternates for backup in case of an absence during a competition. (Must have four shooters per team to compete and cadets cannot shoot on two different teams)
Initial teams placement is based on qualification scores. Top four shooters are "Alpha Team", next four shooters are "Bravo Team", next four are "Charlie Team", and the last two shooters are alternates.
Cadets normally practice two or three days a week, (five days prior to competitions), after school on the JROTC Rifle Range and can move up (or down) in team placement based upon weekly practice scores and averages.
Air Rifle training and competitions are governed by rules published by the Civilian Marksmanship Program (CMP) and the U.S. Army Cadet Command regulations pertaining to Air Rifle Safety & Marksmanship.
Prior to conduction Marksmanship Training and Coaching a JROTC Air Rifle Team, Army JROTC Instructors must first be trained & certified by the NRA as a Range Safety Officer and also must pass certification requirements and test given by the CMP and U.S. Army Cadet Command.
Individual cadet team leaders are identified and responsible for routine tasks are assigned during weekly practice sessions. The overall top shooter is normally designated as overall Team Captain.
